Q+A
I will use this page as a FAQ of sorts regarding this year’s Race the Phantom, if you have a question, just drop us a note and we may post it up here.
When is Race the Phantom 2010? This years race will be from July 16th to July 18th and will feature a midnight start.
How long will RTP10 be? Race the Phantom 2010 will be a 36 hour race.
Do I need a support crew? No, a support crew is not required, in fact, we do not allow support crews. Natural Selection Adventure Racing Staff and Volunteers will ensure your gear is available at planned Transition Areas (TAs).
How many times can I expect to see my gear bin during the race? Racers should be prepared to see their gear bin once during the 36 hours. Likely around the mid-point of the race. Racers should be prepared to be self sufficient for most of the event.
Will there be a place my friends can go to watch me while I am racing? Although this year’s race will be mostly an adventure in unpopulated areas, there will be a couple of opportunities for the public to come and watch racers while they compete. A list will be provided after the start of the race.
**An addition to RTP10 are the services of Track Me 360 and Untamed Adventure Racing, this means that you can now track your favorite team online in real time during the race. This adds a great element to an adventure race and we are very pleased to offer it for 2010.
Is there a way my fans can watch my progress during the race? With the help of TrackMe360 and Untamed Adventure Racing, your fans will be able to follow your progress on our website. TrackMe360 is providing NSAR with GPS tracking devices, or Spot Devices, and Untamed Adventure Racing is setting up the online viewing tool/portal. The good news is that your family and friends will know how you are doing….and the bad news is they will know how you are doing.
Do you have any ‘tips’ for racers this year? Last year we told racers to work on their hill climbing, and those who did appreciated the advice. This year we are telling racers to work on their navigation skills.
What type of weather is typical of the area in July? The average weather conditions from 2004 to 2009 for the dates of July 16th to July 18th are as follows: Max Temperature: 26.6 degrees / Min Temperature: 12.3 degrees / Average Precipitation: 9.04mm
Where can I find the tide tables for the area? Tide tables are available online at this site: http://www.mobilegeographics.com:81/locations/1475.html
What type of paddling can I expect in RTP10? Racers should be ready to paddle a kayak on both River and Ocean water. There will be no white water or fast water, however the water could be rough at times.
What type of mountain biking should I be prepared for? Your exact route will be chosen by your team navigator on race day, but I can say with great confidence that you will have the opportunity to cover most, if not all biking terrains. There will be some pavement riding, logging roads, four wheeler trails and likely some good old fashion bike whacking. The only thing you may not run into is some good clean single track riding.
Will teams of 3 be eligible for the top prizes? Prizing will favor teams of 4. This category includes single Gender and Coed teams. ie. Teams of 4 will be ranked before teams of 3.
What’s on the line this year for prizes? Check out our prizes at And the Winner Gets….. be sure to keep checking back, this list will continue to grow thanks to our great sponsors.
